Our technology demonstrates very significant cost and environmental benefits in multiple commercial applications and is an excellent way to maximise the business case for many thermal processes. The drying technology operates by creating super heated steam as its drying medium. This steam is generated solely from the moisture contained within the wet feedstock being dried, eliminating the requirement for a supplementary steam generation plant.
The superheated steam displaces air/oxygen from the process and creates an inert atmosphere and reduced oxygen conditions for high temperature drying of feedstock materials. The R-02™ drying process is a very fast, safe and energy efficient technology, which is easy to operate and offers numerous processing advantages over conventional drying regimes.
The type and design of the R-02™ dryer and/or R-02™ converter processor type is dependent on the type of material requiring drying or processing in terms of volume throughputs, material size, product density, moisture content, the inherent material surface characteristics and the type of finished products required and their quality. |

| |
| R-02™ Dryer Types |
| R-02™ Single-Stage Continuous Belt Dryers |
Used for low volume throughputs of fragile or solid product/materials requiring low levels
of evaporation with single drying zone temperature control. |
| |
| R-02™ Multi-Stage Continuous Conveyor Dryers |
| Used for high volume throughput of less fragile product/material that contains higher moisture levels and would benefit from "turning over" during drying and require longer drying exposure times. Multiple temperature controlled drying zones can be applied with this design. |
| |
| R-02™ Rotary Drum Dryers |
| Used for high volume bulk drying of non fragile products/materials. The most energy efficient and fast drying of materials that benefit from a "rolling bed" action to expose all the product services to the drying medium. |
| |
| R-02™ Multi-Tier Cascade Dryers |
| Used much like the drum dryer for high volume throughput of materials containing medium to high moisture content. Ideal design for factory floor space saving. The products are cascaded from high to low level via multi belt/slat type conveyors or rotating discs. The product benefits from multi-level turn over preventing adhesion and the dryer can provide multi zone temperature control. |
| |
| R-02™ Tray and Truck Chamber Dryers |
| Ideally suited for batch drying of high moisture content semi-solid materials, granulates, powder and large solid products that cannot be continuously processed. Products or materials would normally be placed onto trays, which in turn are placed onto trucks and wheeled into the dryer. The dryers can be supplied in any number of configurations to suit truck loading quantities. This type of dryer can be programmed with any number of drying cycle profiles to generate optimum product drying conditions. |
| |
| R-02™ Industrial Batch and Tray Dehydrators |
| Capable of drying a large range of products from curing and jerking meat and fish to fruits, fruit leathers, vegetables, nuts, herbs, and seeds to name only a few. |
| |
| R-02™ Process Advantages |
Reduction in process drying times |
Traditional stack is not required |
Reduction of energy requirements |
Energy recovery potential |
High thermal efficiency |
Virtual elimination of the potential explosion and or product combustion risk |
Minimal exhaust emissions to atmosphere |
Lower capital investment in dryers and ancillary equipment |
| |
| R-02™ Drying Efficiency Advantages |
| Steam is a superior drying medium to air for the following advantages. |
Steam transfers more than twice the amount of heat as air for the same mass flow. The fan power required to achieve a given heat transfer is more than halved. |
The viscosity of steam is approximately half that of air at the same temperature which enhances its ability to impinge on or percolate through a moist product thus increasing its drying effect. |
In a superheated steam atmosphere the product temperature quickly attains the steam 100°C saturation temperature, eliminating the moisture's surface tension and halving its viscosity. The absence of surface tension assists the surface moisture to evaporate quickly while the lower viscosity enables the internal moisture to migrate faster to the products' surface. |
The absence of air prevents oxidation of sensitive products. |
Indirect heating used by the R-02™ system avoids product contamination by combustion of residues which occurs with conventional hot air dryers. |
R-02™ condition minimises the risk of combustion or explosion of potentially flammable products, eg woods, plastics, paper, bagasse, etc when being dried at elevated temperatures. |

| R-02™ Business Case |
Since 1996, R-02™ drying technology has been adopted worldwide, R-02™ Drying is a method of drying which uses dry superheated steam at atmospheric pressure, as a heating medium, capable of performing any drying process.
This superheated steam is created solely from moisture contained in the product being dried and is safe to operate, easy to control, offers ultra fast drying times and operates at high thermal efficiencies.
The UK Department of Environment's Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme sponsored industrial trials to compare R-02™ and conventional hot air drying of various products. R-02™ drying gave the following benefits over hot air drying: |
Reduced drying times in all cases of between 30% and 90%. The higher heat capacity of steam, as compared to air, reduces the mass flow rate of steam required to dry the product and that its higher heat transfer coefficient, compared to air, means faster during times. |
Higher throughput, smaller plant, significant capital and operating cost savings. |
Improved product quality including sterilisation, conditioning, oxidation prevention. |
Demineralised water, virtual elimination of noxious emissions, reduced anti-pollution costs |
Not needing a large hot air exhaust stack is another significant positive for some clients. |
The system operates in an essentially air free environment. The near absence of oxygen will help mitigate the risk of fire and explosion hazards. |
The absence of oxygen allows for a higher temperature to be used without concerns for product denaturing through overheating. |
The technology uses significantly less energy than conventional indirect drying due to the fact that flow-through air is not required, which wastes a lot of heat energy. |
Options are available for cost-effective reuse of the energy in the steam vented from the dryer. |
| |
Therefore, the basic business case is:
(a) higher IRR (payback in investment) than conventional hot air drying, and
(b) significantly reduced pollution than conventional drying. |
| |
| In summary, compared to conventional hot air drying, R-02™ drying has demonstrated significant cost and environmental benefits in multiple commercial applications. R-02™ drying's much lower energy consumption offers faster payback of the capital invested. |
